Leadenhall Market

The Victorian market in the City that turned up in Harry Potter spends October on curiosities: a giant beetle under the glass roof, a cabinet of miniature shops, and a walk through the Roman burials and medieval murders of the streets around it.

The jewel beetle

A 4.5-metre light-up jewel beetle under Leadenhall's roof. It appeared from 29 September to 7 October and comes back for Halloween from 24 October to 1 November 2026. It is free to see.

Burials, Bombs & Fantastic Beasts

An evening walking tour of the stranger side of the City — Roman burials, medieval murders, witchcraft and the creatures carved and told about in and around the market. Every Wednesday and Friday in October, 6.30pm to 8pm, £8.30, and it must be booked in advance on Eventbrite.

The Wunderkammer

An installation after the German cabinets of curiosities: three miniature shops, one of them a tiny video shop for the films Leadenhall has appeared in, from Harry Potter to The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. For Halloween its serving hatch is taken over by SoLo Craft Fair, selling spell kits of herbs, scents and gems — ring the bell, Wednesday to Sunday, 1pm to 4pm.

Where it is

Leadenhall Market, Gracechurch Street, EC3, in the City of London. The market is open seven days a week to walk through; shop hours vary.

Programme

Wednesdays and Fridays in October — Burials, Bombs & Fantastic Beasts
Evening walking tour, 6.30pm to 8pm, £8.30, booked in advance on Eventbrite.
Monday 19 October — Hallo-zine Making
A SoLo Craft Fair workshop. Places are limited and booked online in advance.
Friday 23 October — Halloween Pocket Pumpkin Hand Warmer
A SoLo Craft Fair workshop. Places are limited and booked online in advance.
24 October to 1 November — the jewel beetle
The 4.5-metre light-up beetle returns under the market roof. Free.
Sunday 25 October — Vintage Furniture & Flea Market
Vintage furniture, homeware and fashion under the roof, 12pm to 5pm. Free to enter.

Mind the gap in the middle of the month: the beetle went away on 7 October and does not come back until the 24th, so a visit for the photograph belongs in the last week. The walking tour runs the other way — it is an October fixture, and once the beetle is back only two evenings are left, Wednesday 28 and Friday 30. Either of those does both at once: the tour starts at 6.30pm with the beetle already in place under the roof. The spell-kit hatch is the one thing that needs daylight, since it shuts at 4pm — for that, come on a weekend afternoon, and on Sunday 25 October the flea market is on under the same roof.
